Abha sits over 2,200 metres up in the Asir Mountains, and it shows: while the rest of the Kingdom bakes, Abha spends its summer in fog and juniper forest, cool enough that Saudis fly here specifically to escape the heat.
The cable car up to As-Soudah, suspended between just two pillars a kilometre apart, is the easiest way to feel that shift. Below, Rijal Almaa's sixty stone palaces have stood for four hundred years, and Abha's own Art Street turns the city centre into an open-air gallery. This is Saudi Arabia's mountain side, not its desert one.
