About Taif
Taif sits high enough above the coastal heat that the Ottomans built a summer palace here, and Saudis have been following their lead ever since. It's known across the region simply as the City of Roses, for the thousands of farms that turn the surrounding hills fragrant each spring.
Shubra Palace, built in the early 1900s for the Sharif of Mecca, still anchors the old town. From there, the road climbs toward Al Hada, switchbacks lined with cliffside tea stalls and baboons happy to watch you drink your tea, before a cable car carries you the rest of the way up for canyon views the road can't match.
