Flagship guide · Saudi Arabia
Two centuries ago, Riyadh was a walled town of mudbrick alleys inside the oasis of Diriyah, a seat of power, faith and trade at the heart of the Najd. Today it is one of the fastest-changing capitals on earth, and both versions of the city are still standing, a few kilometres apart.
Spend a morning in At-Turaif, where the sun-dried walls of the first Saudi state have been carefully restored, and an evening under the glass sky bridge of Kingdom Centre, 300 metres above the same ground. In between: a dining scene now drawing chefs from Paris and Tokyo, an entertainment district built at giga-project scale, and a desert that is never more than a short drive from wherever you're standing.
This is a first look at what a few days in Riyadh could hold. Tell us your dates and who's travelling, and we'll shape the rest around you.
